Mechanical Testing

The RDI service "Mechanical testing" determines the mechanical properties of materials using the MTS Bionix Series 370 mechanical testing system, configured for tensile, bending and compression tests and for the specialised testing of hip implants from the perspective of their tribological behaviour.

The service allows the direct evaluation of material behaviour under controlled mechanical loading, by determining the modulus of elasticity, the stress-strain curves and other parameters relevant to assessing the strength, stiffness and performance of materials. The alignment equipment is calibrated in accordance with MTS procedure 7348, which supports the accuracy of the measurements and the reproducibility of the experimental results.

The technical capability of the service includes tensile tests with forces of up to 30 kN, compatible with flat and round specimens, bending tests with forces of up to 10 kN and compression tests with a Ø60 compression platen, at forces of up to 100 kN. The available configuration allows the tests to be adapted to different types of materials, specimen geometries and application requirements.

The service is addressed to companies, public institutions, quality control laboratories and bodies involved in the certification of materials, as well as to operators in fields such as the automotive industry, metallurgy, electronics and the development of advanced materials. The results obtained can support material selection, the validation of mechanical performance, quality control, product certification and the optimisation of design or technological solutions.

The measurements are carried out using dedicated subsystems for tensile, bending, compression and specialised testing, together with appropriate specimens, roller fixtures, 10 mm rollers and the auxiliary components required for conducting the tests. Through this infrastructure, ICSTM provides experimental support relevant to applied research, technological development and the assessment of material performance under controlled conditions.
